Phase 3 Build a Bug
This reading game for Phase 3 uses words with the sounds taught including the trigraphs igh, air, ear and ure. The aim of the game is to make as many bugs as possible. Lay the cards face down and each child takes a turn and picks a card, then reads the word. If they read it correctly they keep the card.
There are six different bugs that can be made as each bug uses a set of sounds.
Worm – set 6&7
Inchworm – consonant digraphs
Grey Slug – ai, ee, igh, oa
Grubworm – oo, oo (u), ar, or
Ant– ur, ow, oi
Caterpillar – ear, air, ure, er
The sets can be used as a game or combined to make it more challenging to match the bugs. it also allows it be differentiated by giving each pupil a different bug that they need to build.
